Perfect Costume: Childhood Memory
October 31st, 2014 by Coral

The Earth is a rather cumbersome thing, I think to myself, it gets in the way a lot more than you’d think. I shift in my seat in the van, trying not to dent the massive paper Mache globe.  It is, to be certain, one of the most impressive Halloween costumes my family has ever done. It took weeks of gluing and pasting, and then painting all the continents and islands. But, at last, our masterpiece is ready.

Arriving at the Renaissance Center, I climb out and wait for my dad to lower the costume over me. One hole in each the top and bottom allow me to slide through and wear it. My mother paints my face white with black letters. “North Pole.”

Sarah, my younger sister, is a Palm Tree.  Both of us are unique, everyone streaming into the building around is is dressed as a ghoul, a pumpkin, or a television character.

I am the only planet.

Once inside, adults in monogrammed polos herd us by age into different sections of the large, round, central hall.

I smile at my parents, and my mom waves back, before turning to wave to my sister.  I look around at my competition.

I will win, I think to myself, smugly. None of the other six year olds even compare.

When results are read, I am proved right. Of course, there was no doubt in my mind.

After all our hard work, I have the perfect costume. My mother claims my prize and I part the crowd with my sphere to rejoin my family.

My perfect costume has become the object of envy for my competitors. While the runners up received cute water bottles, decorated with cartoon insects, I receive tickets to a laser light show.  My mom is disappointed, but I’m not sure why. The tickets are far better than some silly water bottle, something I already have at home. Besides, I won, and everyone knows, that is almost prize enough for me.

Soon, all prizes have been awarded and the crowd disperses. My mom pulls out our trick or treat bags, and my sister jumps up and down in excitement. Candy. The real prize of Halloween.

I reach out to take mine, and encounter a problem.  The eastern hemisphere.

Looking down at my perfect costume, I am shocked to discover a flaw.

There is nowhere for my hands.

How am I supposed to get my candy?
