What’s the point?!-Studies
November 12th, 2014 by Coral

Sorry for the two melancholy days in a row, there. Today, a happier topic. Let’s talk about studying. I know, not exactly rainbows and sunshine, but I promise, this post isn’t depressing.

Studying, what’s the point? Interestingly, I get this question from people, phrased in various way, all the time. See, I’m not an English major, nor am I a creative writing major. I’m a History major, yet my career path is as a writer. People wonder how that could possibly relate.

To me, it’s rather obvious. Everything relates to writing. I don’t mean everything an English teacher says, or anything a writing class required.  I mean that everything in the universe is related to writing. Learning about anything can be beneficial to your writing! Anything in the universe!

Why? Well, people write about all different things. I write mostly fantasy and science fiction. To create realistic worlds that make sense, I have to know what makes this world makes sense.  Especially if I’m doing science fiction, I need at least rudimentary understanding of whatever science I’m dealing with.

For Fantasy, oftentimes I’m creating new cultures, new religions, new customs altogether. That’s where my History Major comes into play. I study other cultures and languages and customs and religions and, well, basically, I study what is real to have material to use in building something fantastical.

Every class I have ever taken relates to my writing. Even-shudders-math. Everything you ever learn can apply to your writing. It’s important to understand what you’re writing, ESPECIALLY if you’re making up entire new worlds and realities. If you don’t understand it, neither will your audience.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is that if you love writing, and you also love studying something else, rocket science, chemistry, Rome, whatever, go for it! Don’t let people tell you that you should be in the creative writing program and never stray from it, because, well, they’re just wrong. Everything relates to writing.
